STEM Tools, Advancements in Technology, and our annual Meteor Shower in the month of April!

Hi Shared Science family, welcome to our April blog! We had tons of fun events in April. Over Spring Break we visited the Salvation Army for their Spring Fling Day Camp and had a great turnout at our very own Robo-Tech Fest. There has been so many great things happening with science this month. Keep scrolling to get more insight on what's happening in April such as the Lyrid meteor shower, the new Artificial Intelligence chatbots, and matching great STEM tools with our curious students!


Artificial Intelligence Chatbot

As technology advances, a new form of digital service has been created to efficiently complete jobs.  (AI) powered chatbots are changing the way we get work done. AI Chatbots can interact with humans through chat or text. On Facebook, there are over 300,000 chatbots in use. This technology is so advanced that companies are using it for customer service and assistance instead of actual humans.  



 Lyrid Meteor Shower
This year the annual Lyrid meteor shower took place from Saturday night April 22nd to early morning on April 23rd. Lyrids are known as the oldest recorded meteor shower. The shower gets its name from the constellation Lyra, the point in the sky where the meteors appear to begin. You can witness these meteor showers by making sure you go to a dark location, or an area without artificial light.


Moving Away from Animal Testing 
The Food and Drug Administration no longer requires new drugs to be tested on animals. Developers can apply different methods for testing to get the data they need without involving animals at all. One such method uses simulated human tissue and integrated circuits to gain safe-use details.


Matching Great STEM Learning Tools with Our Curious Students
STEM is a great way for kids to get involved and develop critical thinking skills. Two great tools that are useful to get kids active are ScratchJr and Ozobots. Ozobots are mini robots that are designed to help students learn coding. Students can use ScratchJr as an introduction to programming and learn how to program their own enganging stories and games. Shared Science uses both these tools for our after school program curriculum and our students love it!
